2G – Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM – is a standard for fully digital mobile phone networks that’s mainly used for telephony as well as circuit-switched and packet-switched data transmission and text messaging. The successor to the first-generation analogue systems (A-Netz, B-Netz and C-Netz in Germany), 2G is the most frequently used standard for mobile phones in the world.
