In the madvertise Data Science team we work on hard problems in algorithmic media buying. The data that we work with comes in extremely fast, at tens of thousands requests per second. Our job is to research and prototype real-time learning algorithms to try and monetize on attractive buy patterns as they arise. In this way the team directly influences the bottom line of the company.

We log and store as much of these streams as possible, and by now we have accumulated many terabytes of historical data (and it’s still growing!). These are then employed in training offline machine learning and optimization algorithms, that are used to augment the data and our understanding of it.

Although we are a separate group, the work is performed embedded in teams throughout the company. This means that we work together closely with our Data Engineers in particular, and the Tech department in general. Simultaneously there is a lot of room for our Data Scientists to collaborate with their peers and learn from each other.

As a senior data scientist, you will be take the lead on a data science project in the company. You will work together with other teams and develop solutions hands-on. This involves analyzing data, programming algorithms, and thinking in terms of product and business. Besides this, you will also mentor and work with our junior data scientists.

For this position we are looking for elite candidates with the following profile:

• M.Sc./Ph.D. Mathematics / Physics / Economics or equivalent,
• experience with analyzing large data sets,
• demonstrable machine learning experience & knowledge of the major techniques and methods,
• proficiency with the Hadoop-based Big Data tool chain,
• excellent programming skills (in language of choice, ideally Python): ideally as evidenced by a Github profile,
• creative problem-solving skills,

London/Berlin, 11th December 2012: madvertise, one of the largest mobile audience targeting platforms in Europe, have once again teamed up with xyo, the mobile app search specialist, to take a closer look at the European iOS and Android app market for the latest edition of the madreport.

And the two have uncovered some very interesting stats. For Android, it makes for some great reading.

Here are the findings:

• Total number of iOS downloads across Europe FALLS from 53% in January to under 30% in September 2012
• Total number of Android downloads DOUBLES across Europe between January and September 2012
• Android LEADS iOS in ALL EU5 countries
• UK is Europe’s BIGGEST app economy followed by Germany and Spain
• 809 MILLION downloads in total across Europe in July alone – over DOUBLE the population of America
• Total number of apps downloaded in September 2012 alone reached 790 MILLION. INCREASE of 43% compared to January 2012

Despite the launch of the iPhone 4 S in late 2011 and the iPhone 5 in recent months, Android seems to have well and truly taken a grip on the European app market. iOS download numbers dropping from 53% in January to under 30% in September is staggering, as is the fact that Android has doubled the amount of downloads across Europe.

Seems us Brits are still mad about our apps. Out of the EU5, the UK is the biggest app market. In September 2012, 277 million apps were downloaded in the UK alone. In Spain, the share of Android downloads compared to iOS is HUGE – 78% of apps downloaded are Android.
